STUDENTS 4* SUCCESS AT EDINBURGH FRINGE

Cirencester College students celebrate success at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Students of Cirencester College’s Sundial Theatre Company have gained 4-star reviews this summer the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, for their production of ‘After the Flood’. A new play was written especially for them by Duncan Walthew, Performing Arts lecturer and Producer in Residence at the College.

Described as a ‘wonderfully intelligent thought provoking and very mature piece of speculative fiction that offers us a look into a dark and frighteningly plausible future’, where gangs of young survivors of a cataclysmic worldwide disaster struggle to survive. Eight of them are trapped at the top of a flooded tower block in a submerged city. What happens next in this tensely written thriller kept Edinburgh Festival audiences gripped throughout the 10-day run of performances.

‘The young cast bolster these characters through stellar performances, which bring out the nuances and emotions of the text whilst being able to deal with complex character relations and difficult scenes that would even be a challenge for older actors.’(Broadway Baby).

The Sundial Theatre Company was established three years ago, not only to give young performers in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire the chance to be stretched in challenging roles and interesting theatre but also to have the experience of running a business in a competitive environment.

As the current Chairperson Steve Moyse says: ‘From the organisation of accommodation through to rehearsals and performances was very long and intense but worth every second. The experience gave me the opportunity to work with exceptionally talented actors, directors and techies on a phenomenally written script at the biggest arts festival in the world. Moving onto Drama school has only been possible thanks to the support and training given through 3 years with The Sundial Theatre Company and Performing Arts at the College.’ Steve is joining the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts with a DADA scholarship to study Acting this Autumn.

You can have the chance to see ‘After the Flood’ for yourself when it comes to Sundial Theatre on the evening of Friday 9th September at 7.30pm, £7, free to students. The show is one hour long. It is the opening show of an Autumn season which also includes Richard Digance and Jon Richardson.
