ESFA Colleges Cup First round – Cirencester College 3 New College, Swindon 2

Cirencester go through to the next round after beating close rivals New College, Swindon at the Corinium Stadium on 6 October.

Cirencester took the lead after striker Dan Grieve was fouled in the box.  Captain Mathew Grabe fired home from the spot to give Cirencester the lead.  Cirencester created several opportunities but failed to increase their lead before half time.

In the second half Ciren increased their lead after a brilliant run by winger Craig Foster who crossed for Dan Grieve to fire into the top corner of the net.  New College got back into the game after a long ball into the box which the Cirencester defence failed to clear and centre forward scored.

James Davies increased Cirencester’s lead with a fine finish after a through ball by Mathew Grabe.  Cirencester were then unlucky not to score again when a shot from 35 yards from 1st year Luke Jones thumped against the cross bar.  New College scored after a swift counter attack to make the score 3-2.

Cirencester were put under severe pressure in the last 8 minutes but hung on to secure victory.

Cirencester now play Sparsholt College at home in the 2nd round.
