Last week some of the fastest growing names in Gloucestershire business attended the Gloucestershire Business Show at Cheltenham Race course. Among them were two Young Enterprise businesses from Cirencester College, who were invited along as special guests for a taste of the real business world and to collect another award.
The Cotswold Reclaimers were named “Best Commercially Viable Business” by 6 business people who had been mystery judges at a recent YE Trade Fair. This means that out of all 22 YE companies in the Gloucestershire they were picked as having the most potential to succeed in the real world. Not only did we then have the pleasure of picking up the award at an “After Party” dinner on the Wednesday evening, but the team were also invited to speak at the Investors dinner on the Thursday night. The speech went perfectly and the team ended up picking up not only offers of mentoring but crucially business opportunities, which they are already following up. The judges made a good decision picking TCR as their winners, because as a team they are all incredibly committed to taking the business into the real business world. Now the YE competition is over, they are liquidating the company under YE to set up a private limited company so they can continue to expand over the coming months.
In June the students have been offered a stall for the weekend at the Three Counties Show where they hope to make further business contacts . This business truly has potential and the students are all very determined to making it work.
Innovation and Enterprise Manager Hannah Ash said “this has been a real lift for the two teams this past week, having so much interest in their original ideas and products. Under the support of their Business Advisor, Nigel Chute, the students have all come a very long way. I was so proud of how confidently Amy Bilous spoke when she took to the stage to accept their award on Wednesday evening. This new found confidence in all the students is testament to the journey they all go on and the skill sets they all gain from the process.” Skye Gough from The Cotswold Reclaimers added “the last two days have been amazing! We gained lots of new business and everyone seems really supportive of our idea and wants to help us in the future which is great.”
The same can be said for Ultimate Drive Guide who were also at the Gloucestershire Business Show. Both teams took part in a speed networking event on the Wednesday before we all took to the stage as a panel for a Q&A session on Young Enterprise as a programme. The students had some amazing feedback on both of the businesses and will be following up with new contacts this week. Ultimate Drive Guides app is available for download on both iOS and android platforms and is an information app to assist new drivers in the event of difficulty or an emergency. The week before The Cotswold Reclaimers picked up another award; this time at the Cirencester Chamber of Commerce Awards night where they were paced as runner up in the Young Enterprise category. They were especially pleased to receive this award as they were competing against already established businesses in the GL7 postcode, who have had a number of years to grow and develop their businesses. It was also judged by local business people so the team really feel as though they have been recognised for their potential in a very competitive environment. The trophy cabinet at the college needs an extension after all these awards the teams have picked up between them this year!
