Geology students return as regional champions

Congratulations to seven of Cirencester College’s most resolute Geology students who have returned regional champions from this year’s Geology Challenge, held at the Structural Soils HQ in Bristol.

The victorious team were an all girl group including Heather Wilson, Alissa MacGregor, Sarah Wiltshire, Maisie Hession, Daisy Oliver, Megan Griffiths and Jessica Dunlop.

The competition was entitled ‘The Year of Resources’, teams were invited to create a 6 minute presentation, a scientific poster (which the Cirencester team called ‘Earth in the Balance’) and a challenging geological quiz. In a closely fought competition Cirencester ended up triumphant over Hereford Sixth Form College by just 2 points

A delighted Geology lecturer Gareth James explained, ‘The team were exceptional, they gave an incredibly professional presentation and answered the judges questions with such clarity that it rendered them speechless!  This was a well-deserved result, they have worked extremely hard and produced some excellent quality work. They did themselves and the College proud and will now go through to London for the National Final.”

Once the main competition was over, the students had a guided tour around the Structural Tours Warehouse and were given a presentation about the importance of Geology in the Hinkley Point C project.

One of the students Heather Wilson explained, ‘Taking part in this year’s Geology Challenge was a brilliant success and a thoroughly enjoyable experience. It took a lot of preparation, but the day went really well and provided me with lots of valuable insight into the opportunities Geology can offer post-education. I have gained vital experience, as in the future I am looking to continue along the geological route, hopefully to write for the National Geographic in the future.’

The National Finals take place at Burlington House in London on 28 March 2019 where the students will meet the winners of all the other regional finals.
